Christian mission Aid - Sign LanguageThey are part of us and live with us, but more often than not, they go through life without a voice. They are largely ignored by society. These are deaf people. CMA’s Sign Language program, which began in 2003, seeks to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing, becoming a voice for the deaf. In Kenya, estimates show there are 200,000 deaf people. Most of these are illiterate and uneducated in important matters that affect their lives. Some have never heard the message of the Gospel neither do they know about social issues that affect their lives such as HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, they do not know of any forum through which their problems can be addressed. This is because they have no one to speak for them. At Christian Mission Aid, we seek to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing by teaching hearing people to be a voice for the deaf. This is through our Sign Language class, taught to hearing people by a deaf teacher and experience the world through his personal experiences. Coming from different backgrounds and occupations, each student has a story to tell and a burning desire to be an advocate for the deaf. Trhough the program, graduates are able to make a positve impact in the lives of death people in their communities, not only giving them a voice, but also sharing the message of God’s love for them, which surpasses words.
