Brookhouse School is perhaps one of the most prestigious schools in Africa. Situated in the leafy suburbs of Karen, it is the only school in Africa with an imposingly fabulous grand castle standing right at the centre.
High walls of the posh Karen suburb, to the broken down shanty homes in Kuwinda slum, a connection between two communities divided by their social status has taken a turn around Brookhouse School has opened its hands and embraced the children living in Kuwinda slum. Christian Mission Aid, through the children ministries program, connected the two worlds last year through the ‘Christmas Food Bucket drive.’ Visiting the slum for the first time last year, Brookhouse’s Community service class was overwhelmed with sadness, seeing the state of living that children almost their age have to endure. This was the driving force behind their attachment to children in Kuwinda slum.
Broken sewers, tiny spaced shanties and congestion of homes are the main feature in the slum. Garbage heaps in the slum are seen everywhere you walk. Children, emaciated due to lack of good nutrition, play about in the slum, without shoes on their little feet, wearing tattered clothes.
The children living in Kuwinda have never been the same since the inception of this relationship. Through their generous contribution, Brookhouse school students have adopted each child in Kuwinda Kindergarten School. The students enjoy interacting and playing the children when opportunity arises. Recently, through an outreach, Brookh ouse came with a team of doctors, students and teachers, visiting Kuwinda slum. A medical camp was set up to do medical check up on children within the slum, something parents of Kuwinda slum cannot afford. Despite the human waste, thrown in the garbage heaps, the Students from Brookhouse got their hands dirty, and helped clean up the slum. They collected many bags of garbage through out the slum, leaving a clean environment conducive for children to run around and play games. Besides interacting with the community, Brookhouse also cooked food for children in the slum, and painted Kuwinda Baptist Church. A pillar of hope for Kuwinda Community has now been painted and looks ever brighter. This touched the residence of Kuwinda and more so the pastor of the church Pastor Jackson Kiiru. He could not hide the joy in his heart emenating from his wide smile because; this very church is a class for the Kuwinda Kindergarten School during the week. Kuwinda children relish the company of Brookhouse students as they visit each other from time to time. To Brookhouse, we say thank you for your kind and generous contribution to Kuwinda slum community. |
