Aid & Relief

CMA responds quickly and efficiently to disasters in Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda with aid and relief. Our efforts are predominantly based in South Sudan, where poor health is a crippling factor for many. People lack basic hygiene knowledge and health facilities are not readily accessible – or worse yet, there are no health facilities.

Since 1993, CMA’s health care program has been working in the remote area of Upper Nile running several health care centers (PHCCs) and several health care units (PHCUs).

CMA clinics are the only form of health care in these areas and are crucial in treatment early medical intervention and management of outbreaks. In 2007, CMA treated 52,896 people both inpatient and outpatient and successfully contained a cholera outbreak that had affected 472 individuals .

Training

Sudanese nationals form the core of our work, in South Sudan. We provide training allowing the momentum for change to build from within the community itself. By transferring responsibilities to trained community workers, we empower them to build a sustainable network of effective healthcare that continues after the official program ends. Sudanese nationals are trained as clinical officers, nurses, pharmacy and lab assistants, traditional birth attendants and community health workers.

Also, as part of the training and making communities independent, CMA completed hand over plans for one of the clinics in South Sudan. This is in addition to building the capacity of three indigenous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to carry out eye care work.

Extended Program of Immunization (EPI) and Mother Child Care (MCH)

The extended program of immunization (EPI) gives Sudanese nationals the opportunity to get vaccinated against prevalent diseases in their areas. The immunizations, otherwise unavailable to them, have prevented thousands from contracting both life-threatening diseases, and major illnesses that sometimes affect communities as a whole.

Village to village mobilization is a major component of the medical programs at CMA. In addition to immunization, mothers are trained on basic health and hygiene practices. As a result, the number of diseases due to a lack of knowledge and immunity has decreased significantly in areas where CMA has reached. Mothers are now raising healthy and strong children, and families are leading healthier lives too.

Health and Nutrition

Due to poverty, over 70% of the people in Sudan can hardly afford one balanced meal a day.

As a result, many suffer from severe malnutrition. CMA provides nutritional care both to malnourished children and adults and gives health and nutrition education.

Many lives have been saved and countless more continue to be as feeding programs outreach some of the most undernourished communities, victims of war and famine, and poverty stricken families and communities.

Dental Care

CMA has initiated a pioneer dental unit in South Sudan where hundreds of patients have been treated. In most of the areas CMA operates, the people have never even heard of a dentist before. Aching teeth are extracted with crude and rusty instruments like nails and sadly many of the victims suffer from fatal infections.

In addition to providing much needed dental care, CMA shares information with Sudanese nationals on dental hygiene, advocating for prevention rather than cure.

Emergency Response

Disasters can instantly leave thousands homeless and without food, water or clothes. CMA provides quick, appropriate aid to those that need it most.

In South Sudan, CMA provides relief assistance through emergency treatment and control of life threatening illnesses such as cholera and meningitis.

CMA also provides food, clothes and blankets to victims of drought and internal conflicts in remote communities and slum areas in dire need.
